Summer internship program 2009

Interns play a key role in all aspects of Pivot's work.

In the last two summers a group of committed interns have provided over five working years of research, planning, committee work, administration, and outreach to Pivot's advocacy work.

Pivot is committed to using the law to improve the lives of thousands of DTES residents. Each staff member at Pivot brings unique knowledge and experience to the organization creating a truly unique, consensus-based dynamic that is engaging and effective.

Pivot’s Summer Internship Program provides law, graduate, and university students the chance to work with expert staff on community-based, high-impact social justice work.

Pivot’s legal campaigns, Housing, Child Welfare , Policing and Security, and Sex Work and a new campaign to launched in 2009, Health, each offer internship placements with accomplished and committed supervisors. The Hope in Shadows calendar project, Business and Development, and Administration and IT also offer internship placements.

Summer positions with Pivot are designed to give students a significant understanding of non-profit legal advocacy.

Every year we offer a variety of extra-curricular activities during the summer in which interns are invited to participate.

These activities range from “lunch and learn” training sessions with community stakeholders (politicians, policy-makers, advocates, community members, DTES organizations), Friday-afternoon drinks with staff and other interns, and other activities, such as tours of community organizations, prison hearings, and historical walking tours of the DTES.

Each placement contributes to Pivot’s mission for progressive social change in BC.

Legal campaign work is focused around primary and secondary legal and social science research furthering Pivot's legal advocacy.

Hope in Shadows placements are dedicated to implementing community development programs and engaging in community outreach empowering DTES residents through expression and employment.

Business and development placements are centered around event and communications strategy and its implementation towards generating widespread, grassroots support for Pivot’s work.

Administration and IT positions ensure the successful day-to-day operation of the Legal Society and LLP.

The application process is straightforward and easy.

All applicants are required to participate in an in-person or telephone interview prior to securing their placement.

We ask that you email a cover letter and résumé to, Michaela Montaner, by Friday, January 30, 2009 with "2009 SUMMER INTERNSHIP APPLICATION" in the subject bar.

The cover letter and resume should clearly indicate the specific internship placements that interest you and your relevant background and experience.

Applications will be accepted after the deadline but positions will begin being filled once interviews begin.

Pivot’s Summer Internship Program is tailored to the individual.

Because internships are unpaid we are happy to support requests for funding to third parties.

If your funding request is due before March 2009 please include any paperwork required to complete your funding submission when you submit your application for the Summer Internship Program.

In terms of time commitment, for the most part placements are fulltime – Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. – however, depending on the nature of the campaign work some part-time positions may be available.

In February your interviewer will be able to discuss this with you in further detail.

Important dates:

Initial application period: December 1 2008 – January 30, 2009

Interviews begin: February 2, 2009

Successful applicants notified: March 1, 2009 (subject to change)
